ANNA DOWLING (SA / BADIMIA PEOPLE WA),
BAY THE ARTIST (SA / TONGA), JANAKI LELE (SA / INDIA), AMANDA NG (SA / MALAYSIA) CURATED BY OLIVIA KUBIAK AND ASHLYN-JADE SCHWENKE
Inheritance is an intercultural exhibition about heritage, culture and the manner in which we connect with our own personal histories. Young curator duo Olivia Kubiak and Ashlyn-Jade Schwenke bring together a group of culturally diverse emerging artists from South Australia that each enfold reverberations of their cultural inheritance into their contemporary art practice to tell stories of history, memory, discovery and family.
Navigating unique journeys of self-discovery and contemplation, artists Anna Dowling, Janaki Lele, Bay the Artist and Amanda Ng each find ways to navigate the space created by time and distance to bring together diverse aspects of their identities. In a cosmopolitan world where multiculturalism is often treated as a state of being that can be negotiated, these four artists share familiar stories of inheritance where multiculturalism is not a construct but an inherent aspect of self.
