Introducing you to a fusion of traditional songs from Türkiye and contemporary jazz, TurqOz brings joy to the unfamiliar, a jaunt down the road less travelled.
TurqOz is a unique ensemble. It is the meeting place of traditional songs from Türkiye and contemporary jazz. As the ensemble has evolved, the addition of jazz standards and some cleverly arranged pop have been included to further bend genres.
Formed by Aysegul Altiok and Tim Matthew, the group began in September 2023, performing at Her Majesty’s Theatre as part of the earthquake fundraising night for Türkiye and Syria. This led to performances at the 2024 Adelaide Fringe, where TurqOz won a Best Music of The Night Award.
The concept of TurqOz was to create a highly imaginative performance, unusual and refreshingly different. A platform for improvisation and tradition, familiar and unknown, east and west. The ensemble is still in its early evolution, with many exciting ideas to explore.
The members are deeply experienced, full time professional players and educators, who are highly skilled and greatly versatile.
