Nexus Arts Presents Common Ground

Nexus Arts is pleased to present our mid-year program Common Ground, featuring live music and visual arts that share stories from culturally diverse artists from across the country

Common Ground is a celebration of connection at Nexus Arts, where artists and audiences meet across cultures, disciplines, and perspectives. In a time when the world can feel divided, this program highlights the shared spaces that art makes possible.

By bringing together musicians and visual artists, Common Ground explores the ties between people, traditions, ideas and places. The works invite audiences to listen deeply, encounter new viewpoints and discover the stories that link us

Some artists this season collaborate across cultural and creative practices, while others draw on personal histories and community narratives. Each offers a different way of understanding what it means to meet, exchange and create alongside one another.

At its heart, Common Ground is about gathering together, creating space for artists to share their voices and for audiences to experience the richness of contemporary cultural expression.

Join us, listen and discover the places where our stories intersect.

Fruit Tree Tea Workshop (10th April)

Developed during a three month Nexus Arts studio residency, the Fruit Tree Sun showcases new work shaped by this period of research, reflection and creative growth.

Centred in this gathering is tea making, story sharing and reflections on inheritance. With ingredients inspired by Allison’s own maternal backyard, the garden becomes a metaphor for her family’s maternal history in Australia.

Working together for the first time for Fruit Tree Sun, the artists aim to find the intersections where their practice, histories and current cultural contexts meet and ask the question of: what do we inherit, and how do we choose what to pass on?

The Adventurous Project: Graphic Scores of Austin Engelhardt (24 April & 1 May)

Composer, improviser, and visual artist Austin Engelhardt brings together an eclectic group of musicians for an evening of curiosity, collaboration, and sonic exploration. His work explores new ways of communicating through sound, notation, and shared creative practice, often inviting performers into an active, interpretive relationship with the music.
Joining him are flutist and sonic artist Maria Zhdanovich, currently studying at the Australian National Academy of Music and known for weaving Western art music traditions with contemporary composition and improvisation; Australian pianist and composer Esmond Choi, whose work bridges research, performance, and experimental repertoire; and saxophonist Derek Pascoe, who is known for constantly pushing the boundaries of his instrument and the possibilities of what music can be.
Together, these artists create a dynamic musical space where experimentation, improvisation, and composition intersect—reminding us that music, at its heart, is meant to be played.
