Cultivate @ Nexus Arts Residency: Announcing Successful Recipients
Nexus Arts is thrilled to announce the very first recipients of the Cultivate @ Nexus Arts Residency: Jennifer Trijo and Nahlla Barbosa!
Through the Cultivate @ Nexus Arts residency, Jennifer and Nahlla will develop bold new works over the rest of the year, with their projects to be shared with audiences at Adelaide Fringe 2026.
This residency aims to foster experimentation and creation in culturally diverse and intercultural artistic practice, offering a co-collaborative residency and mentorship between an emerging artist, a mid-career artist and Nexus Arts. The two selected performing artists will get a 4 week access to Nexus Arts, to progress one new work each to present at Adelaide Fringe 2026.
This residency will include:
- Emerging artist grant – $4k + mentorship sessions (up to 6 sessions)
- Mid- career artist grant – $7k ( will be required to also offer mentorship to other artist)
- Adelaide Fringe Show Registration costs ($395 per artist – to be paid from Artist Fee)
- Provision of Venue Manager, Stage Manager and Venue Technician for each Adelaide Fringe season by Nexus Arts
Resident Artist – Nahlla Barbosa
Nahlla Barbosa is a Colombian singer-songwriter and performer based in Adelaide, with over a decade of international experience across Columbia, the Middle East, and Australia. Her music fuses Latin Folk traditions such as cumbia, salsa, son cubano, bolero, and Latin jazz with contemporary indie pop, alternative folk, electronic and experimental textures, exploring themes of hope, women’s empowerment, mental health, migration, and resilience. Since moving to Australia in 2023, she has actively contributed to multicultural arts and wellbeing initiatives, collaborating with Mariposa Trails on suicide prevention, performed at the National Suicide Prevention Conference 2024 and composed music for theatre productions such as Legacy (with True Ability Ensemble) and Unmasked (by True North – Anglicare SA). She has also performed at the Adelaide Fringe Festival and The Gatsby Lounge. Winner of the 2023 Study Got Talent award, Nahlla is currently preparing to release her debut EP in 2025.
Resident Artist – Jennifer Trijo

Jennifer Trijo is a Filipino multi-disciplinary artist based on Kaurna Yerta. She has toured nationally with productions including Hadestown (Opera Australia and Jones Theatrical Group), Once (Darlinghurst Theatre Company), Beautiful – The Carole King Musical (Matt Ward Entertainment), The Deep North (South Australian Playwrights Theatre), Disenchanted (Mad About Theatre) and Miss Saigon (LWAA & Michael Coppel). As a composer and theatre maker, she has written around 100 original songs and created Someday – A Mindful Cabaret, earning critical acclaim. In 2024, Jennifer was a finalist in the APRA AMCOS Professional Development Award Music Theatre category for her musical Dragonfly and won a 2024 Green Room Award with the multi-talented cast of Once. A regular performer at the OzAsia Festival and Adelaide Fringe, she also collaborates with ensembles including the Nexus Arts Orchestra and Hyoshi in Counterpoint ensembles.
